Technical translation
TECHNICAL TRANSLATIONS OR THE IMPOSSIBLE QUEST FOR TRANSLATORS SPECIALIZED IN ALL FIELDS
In our profession, we all agree that no single technical translator combines the skills needed to do translations in all fields.
Everyone promises the customer that the translation will be given to THE translator specialized in the relevant field…
Of course, what you then need to save the day is a data base including hundreds of translators covering all technical specialization areas… But multilingual project managers all know that things don’t work that way!
Why?
First of all, because there is no guarantee that THE specialized translator in a given field will be available to do the translation when the project is confirmed. Secondly, because it is rare that major technical projects involve only one specific field of competence. Often, the project also calls for skills related to style or even to legal knowledge. In such cases, it is advisable that the translation benefit both from the insight of a general technician and from that of a professional linguist or legal expert. Teamwork makes it possible to avoid the pitfalls arising from a one-sided vision.
